Gail Nonnecke estimates she has built strong connections with more than 4,000 students over the course of her career at Iowa State University. As she prepared for retirement this past spring, she reflected on her 40-plus years in Ames.

Sharing her passion for ag, pork

Sterling (Schnepf) Meyer (’14 animal science) and her husband, Tyler (’14 ag studies), have a passion for connecting younger generations to agriculture. From farm tours to bringing lambs for show-and-tell at school, they see the value in opening northwest Iowa youngsters’ eyes to ag opportunities.

Innovating to tackle plant diseases

José González-Acuña knows the value of networking. Connections established while living and working in Costa Rica brought him to Iowa State, where he’s collaborating on projects to develop new plant disease management tools and support effective fungicide use.

What is a favorite memory from your time as an Iowa State student?

Quote from Nicole Jonas: "Hort club and all the fun activities we did together. Growing things for our plant sales and going on field trips to see all areas of horticulture. Study Abroad with our professors. We were so close in college and still regularly get together for the 22 years since!”

What is a favorite memory from your time as an Iowa State student?

Quote from Brian Sexton: "Going to Australia on a study abroad over Spring Break 2008. For 11 days I was fortunate enough to travel with a group of students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to Sydney and Melbourne. We were able to see first-hand agriculture in Australia, such as a sheep farm, canola factory, vineyards, and so much more. It was an amazing trip with amazing people! It's been 17 years since we went, and I'd say it's still one of the best trips I've taken.”

What is a favorite memory from your time as an Iowa State student?

Quote from Briony (Lachinski) Atkinson: "In 1998, the ISU football team beat Iowa for the first time in 15 years. I was starting my freshman year and from Minnesota, so was not yet a college football fan. I was in my dorm room studying when all of a sudden, cars were racing through the parking lot honking and students were cheering in the hallway and I had no idea what was going on. I have now lived in Iowa and Ames for almost 27 years and love my Iowa State teams and know what an amazing day that was.”

What is a favorite memory from your time as an Iowa State student?

Quote from Val (Krumm) Plagge: "VEISHEA 2004 and 2006. 2004 was the riots, and I was in my dorm waiting to go to Welch to help with cleanup as part of being on the VEISHEA committee when I started getting messages saying, ‘Don't come to Welch, stay away,’ and I could hear screaming from my dorm. Then there was no VEISHEA in 2005, and in 2006 it was back and rather than being on VEISHEA central committee, I was the College of Ag VEISHEA Co-Chair. I simply had a blast with all the activities all week."
